How to perform the barbell shrug

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart, and hold a barbell with an overhand grip, hands shoulder-width apart. Let the barbell hang at arm's length in front of your thighs. Keeping your arms straight, shrug your shoulders upward as high as you can, engaging your traps. Pause briefly at the top, then lower your shoulders back to the starting position and repeat.
